My Metaphysics

I didn’t think I’d be able to write this at all and I am still surprised now. It was only a few weeks ago that I had believed that it could be up to three years before anything would have been started. That said, I can’t speak for the quality of the work. My own naiveté and lack of scholarship leads me to think that better people have long dismissed the few ideas that I have presented here. Still, in my defense, what I do present is what I sincerely believe and if there is nothing new here, then I at least have accomplished stating with whom I agree.

The writings that follow are my own metaphysics. As far as I know, it is entirely unique.

I am a Harry Potter fan. And for better or worse it was because of Harry Potter that I started to write again. I thought, ‘I can write something about Occlumency.’ This is getting on eight months ago now (early summer ‘07). About six months ago I wrote some decent stuff, but it was just a warm-up so I could write some philosophy of biology. I think the phil. bio’s really good stuff, but it really was something I thought of in the Spring of `04 and a warm-up to my metaphysics. Now I think my metaphysics is great stuff, but really, I wrote it because I needed a theory strong enough to write about Harry Potter. So now I can have some fun.

p.s. I guess it is more accurate to say that there is a lack of terms for some of the things I want to write about. This is why I write using Harry Potter references: some of Rowling’s made-up words suit my purposes. I remember a teacher in college mentioning this problem when discussing Hume: he said that Hume was always ‘grasping’ at words because the language lacked words to properly describe the phenomena. I thought then that it was a very strange state to find yourself in. I can tell you now that it is.

p.p.s. ‘Legilimency and the Imperious Curse’ will be coming eventually, but don’t hold your breath.

–> update 2008-05-02: getting closer to finishing up the Imperius Curse. It’s going to be quite a bit longer for legilimency. –>2008-06-02 a draft has been sitting… just a little bit more time.
